The solar industry is littered with salespeople who give out incorrect information, including the commonly seen YouTube commercials that claim the federal government is giving out "free solar". This includes verbiage such as "hurry, as there are limited funds." It's entirely false for homeowners, while what is true, is that the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 does include a plan that gives property owners a 30% federal tax credit - known as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and there is a $4 billion budget for specific commercial projects. The 30% ITC is eligible between 2022-2032. It will decrease to 26% for systems installed in 2033 and to 22% for systems installed in 2034. The tax credit expires starting in 2035 unless Congress renews it. This tax credit applies to both residential and commercial systems.
Some salespeople claim you can also include a new roof, which is not necessarily true. For example, building integrated photovoltaics such as Tesla solar tiles are eligible, but not traditional roofing material itself. These little details go a long way in determining project costs, and federal tax credit claims.
